How an E-Commerce Seller Customized a Ring from Idea to Sample

How an E-Commerce Seller Customized a Ring from Idea to Sample

For e-commerce sellers, standing out in a crowded jewelry market often means offering something unique. At SourcingPH, we recently helped one of our clients—an independent online jewelry seller—bring a custom ring design to life from scratch. This case shows how the custom jewelry process works, even if you’re starting with just an idea.

Step 1: Finding the Ideal Reference Design

The client approached us with a vision: to launch a signature engagement ring as the centerpiece of their new online store. Without any technical drawings, they provided a few reference images from Pinterest and Instagram.

We helped them narrow down the style and key details: stone shape, prong design, ring width, and finish. This step ensures that the factory understands the expected look and feel before we move into production.

💡 Tip for sellers: High-quality, multi-angle reference photos save time and reduce miscommunication during development.

Step 2: Building the 3D CAD Model

Once the reference design was confirmed, we worked with a professional CAD jewelry designer to create a 3D rendering. The model included:

  • Accurate dimensions
  • Metal type (925 sterling silver)
  • 18K gold plating
  • Stone settings and size

We sent the 3D model to the client for feedback and completed two quick revision rounds. The final version was approved within a few days.

🛠 The CAD file is essential for both visualization and mold creation in the sampling and production stages.

Step 3: Producing the Physical Sample

After final CAD approval, the factory produced a physical prototype within 12 working days. The sample was crafted using the chosen materials, and we conducted a full quality inspection before sending it to the client.

The client was highly satisfied with the sample’s quality and only requested minor changes (adjusting stone clarity and ring size) before moving forward.

Cost Breakdown and Minimum Order

One of the most important aspects for new sellers is understanding the cost and volume requirements:

  • Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ): 1,000 pieces
  • 💰 Starting Capital: Approximately PHP 30,000
  • 🧪 Sample Fee: Around PHP 3,000 — this cost is deductible from your bulk order

This structure makes it possible for small and mid-sized e-commerce brands to enter the custom jewelry space without needing a massive upfront investment.
